Curtis T. Tackles Antievolution1. Humans Evolved From Monkeys
You might also hear the question, "If humans evolved from monkeys, why are there still monkeys?" Firstly, humans did not evolve from monkeys. Monkeys and Apes evolved from a common ancestor. Beyond that, there is fossil evidence that shows that older species still lived in parallel to the newer. You see this when new species or subspecies are formed due to the isolation of a group today. So even if this statement was true, which it is not, the argument is still incorrect. Granted, the older species would be still evolving itself after the time of the initial split.
2. It's Only A Theory
Yes, it is a theory, which is the best you'll get out of Science. "Facts" are just well established theories. (The term "fact" is more a laymen term.) What they are trying to say is "It's only a hypothesis." Even that is wrong because there is more than enough evidence and data that show it to be "worthy" of the title "Theory". This is due to its ability to show physical evidence and make predictions that have come true. Transitional fossils are a great example of this. (More on that later.)
3. If Nobody Saw It, We Can't Be Sure It Happened
Then you can't be sure any god created this planet or reality! If a tree falls in the forest but no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound? Yes, don't you know how sound is produced? Seriously, beyond those jabs, we have observed isolation and adaptation changes species over the years and have in a few cases, seen some on the verge of becoming new species. In this, there is more observable evidence for evolution than any supernatural creation.
4. Science Can't Say Anything About Origins
About what? The universe? Life? Of course not, that's not what evolution is about! Evolution primarily works with life after it was started. Just because gravity does not explain why men like peanut-butter more than women does not prove it wrong. This said, natural selection and other evolutionary forces would likely be at work anyway.
5. Obsolete Concepts
For some reason, you human have bad memories; or selective memory. You seem to think that once something happens, it doesn't change. There were a lot of hoaxed and misidentified fossils and bones that have lead to a lot of confusion back in the day; but most of those were over 100 years ago. Piltdown Man or Nebraska Man, for example, are not even thought of as anything more than a warning to all about those who are not in it for the betterment of society or science. Such has also happened in religion a lot. Does this mean that the gods (or God) does not exist? Maybe, according to this logic.
6. There Are No Intermediate Fossil Forms
Where have you been? Most who claim this have no recent information. It is almost exclusively old and outdated. Archaeopteryx is a great example for bird (from dinosaurs). Many use whales as a "great" example... and it was, a couples decades ago. Now there are over ten species that clearly show the transition from a terrestrial mammal to a marine mammal; just like evolution predicted. Humans are another good example. Many will also argue that there are always missing gaps in the fossil record. Duh! There will never be a complete record but there is enough to make the case. For every fossil found, you make at least two new gaps that have to be filled, according to this logic. If you want the gap argument, then there are enough gaps for a god to discredit it outright.
7. Evolution Is Not Testable
Where have you been? Darwin was one of the first to think that bird and reptiles were related. Evolution itself predicts that we should find fossils of a transitional nature and that species would change over time even today. All of this has good supporting evidence. Not testable? Only if you have no clue about the subject.
8. Evolution Means Humans are Just Animals
Duh! Sorry, but you're no different from me in that respect (except I'm also a puppet!). Somehow being called an animal devalues the human ego. Never understood that. Yes, you are an anthropoid, an ape, a mammal, an animal. You're not a rock or a plant, yes?
9. Evolution is Just Random
No; while random does have a part to play, it is not the sole force behind evolution. It's call natural selection for a reason. There is also the law of physics that come into play. Plus, new traits can both be good or bad. The bad will likely die out (though not always) and the good will likely survive. This is not random. Random usually refers to genetic mutations and other unknown factors; but even these have some rhyme and reason behind them.
10. Complexity Cannot Arise Naturally
O-RLY? Then where does anything come from? Let's remove life from the equation for a moment. If this were true, then atoms would not become larger and more intricate. Salt, for example, could not then form; nor could water or even the air you breathe. The natural forces that govern this reality, physics for example, allow certain things to happen and others not. Complexity is just a result of these processes happening over and over. While some will tear down, others will build up. How do you think plants transform solar energy into sugars to live on?
