My name is Erwin R. Morgenstern, a Feldjäger Oberstabsfeldwebel of the Bundeswehr Streitkräftebasis. Several years ago I was assigned by the Global Safety Commission of the United Nations Security Council to the Diplomatic Security Department, which is charged with the personal protection and safety of foreign diplomats, emissaries, and U.N. dignitaries in hostile regions or situations. In October 2001, I was put in charge of D.S.D. Section Nine. Originally created in March 1993 as a anti-terrorism unit to thwart threats to U.N. representatives, it was reassigned in April 2006 to the Global Medical Research Department. While the change in mission was legitimate, it's true purpose was to allow Section Nine to covertly identify, observe, and protect non-human entities known as Hybrids; human-like beings with strange abilities and powers.

Section Nine's current mission is to maintain vigilant worldwide observation and protection for the Hybrids with minimal interference in their daily lives. While still the head of Section Nine after the reassignment, I gave up primary control of the section to my number two man, who deals with the day-to-day operations. This allowed me to oversee all actions taken by Section Nine's new Hybrid Unit. I also headed the security detail for one of the Hybrids (Emma). The Hybrid's existence is little more than rumor for most of the world and it is our job, for the moment, to keep it that way until they can more fully understood. Their powers and abilities, if utilized in the wrong fashion, could easily throw our world into chaos. While personal interaction with them by member of the Hybrid Units its strictly monitored and limited, they are known to play games with their observers and speak with us 'regularly'; the former is much to our chagrin.

There are three known Hybrids, all female. For security purposes, they are listed as Hybrid 0.1, codename: Morgenstern; Hybrid 0.2, codename: Nightfall; and Hybrid 0.3, codename: Illuminati. Farah (0.1) has fare aesthetically enhanced skin, black hair with pink highlights, heterochromia eyes (left: purple; right: blue), wears pink and purple Victorian apparel, and is the youngest of the three (physically). She looks very much like a Harlequin. Emma (0.2) also has fare aesthetically enhanced skin, blue hair with purple highlights, heterochromia eyes (left: blue; right: purple), and wears blue and black grunge-punk clothing. Her eyes suggest a kin relation to Farah. Ginny (0.3), too, has fare aesthetically enhanced skin, black hair with sparse green highlights, green eyes, and wears green and black Gothic-styled neo-traditional Japanese regiments. She is the oldest (physically) and acts as a big sister, though it is unknown if they are all blood siblings.

No language seems to be beyond their ability to understand or speak, though their words are often vague and cryptic. Their voices are angelic and hypnotic enough to cease battles. Farah is best known for playing hide-and-seek with those watching over her. Always free-spirited, she is never-the-less very prim and proper. She is also the quietest of the three. Emma is strong willed and independent but also kind and generous to those in need. She speaks more than Farah and usually acts more mature; though she, too, is found of playing similar games. Ginny is the most knowledgeable and mature of the three, though what she says is chosen wisely. She only plays games when with Farah and Emma and usually only goes M.I.A. when changing her location, at which she'll stay in for months at a time. They are all very sweet-natured ladies and have an inexhaustible curiosity and fascination for human culture and history. They all love ice cream and cake.

The term “hybrid” is a reference to the assortment of themes and symbols that adorn and highlight their bodies and garments; all of which can be found on Earth. Some even seem animated and alive. Their species, total population, and origin are still unknown, though it is assumed they are not native to this planet. What is known is they shed tears of lithium; specifically, a unique ion compound called Lithium angelica. Its appearance is likened to Technicolor quicksilver. When dried, this liquid creates multi-prism crystals of Trilithium bicarbonate angelic; though it is most potent in its liquid form. It is truly a miraculous compound. In addition to its lack of side effects, it has the ability to instantly cure bipolar and other mental disorders. The Hybrids also have the ability to control the environment around them. Factors like light and darkness are easily manipulated by them. They also have advanced empathetic and telepathic abilities.

The first confirmed Hybrid was Farah. Section Nine was sent into Argentina in March 2006 to protect Dr. L. Mactans Diaguitas (Codename: Kamikaze777), an Ecuadorean scientist under the U.N. doing breakthrough research with, among other compounds, Lithium. Due to his facility's location, his research team was under increasing attack from a local guerrilla group, who's base of operation was nearby. They were unhappy about the Mercosur Regional Trade Agreement and saw them as easy targets to take out their frustration. Upon arrival, Dr. Daiguitas informed us about reported sightings of a strange girl in the area and his concern for her safety. While in one of several battles with the guerrillas, we finally located the girl when she got caught in our crossfire. Section Nine successfully secured her and brought her to Dr. Daiguitas, who concluded that Farah, as she called herself, was not human. She was unlike anything we had encountered before.

He coined the term “hybrid”, referencing her strange assortment of European clothing and symbols. Unwilling to share this revelation with the U.N. due to the international fallout from such a discovery, and after consulting with myself and Section Nine, Dr. Daiguitas worked with the Argentinian government, who remained ignorant of our true intent, and utilized their temporary position on the U.N. Security Council to change the mission of Section Nine. He first proposed to consolidate all medical research into one department. He then argued for a dedicated security force for scientists in remote and hostile regions. As a result, the Global Medical Research Department was created under his direction. And with approval from the Security Council, Section Nine was officially reassigned to the department. While most new members would be assigned to normal teams for different research groups, the original core team would focus on Farah.

This became increasing hard when she decided to continue her journey, especially with her ability to control and manipulate light; which quickly led us to give her the codename 'Morgenstern'. Section Nine's new Hybrid Unit was put to the test keeping up with her. From Argentina, Farah toured Brazil, Ecuador, Panama, and Mexico; but after a couple months, she disappeared. We franticly searched the countryside but found no trace of her. With more trouble from the guerrilla group and the U.N. approval, we evacuated Dr. Daiguitas and his research team to Germany and set up our base of operations. Part of the reasoning behind the location choice was my personal contacts in the region. Another reason was the strange reports of what could only be described as Hybrid sightings. However, these reported darkness manipulation. By July, we were set  up.

Unsure if it was Farah, it was still our best lead. Once we got the department relocated, we checked the area around Munich and the rest of Bavaria, where we were now stationed. No evidence of Farah or another Hybrid was found. After a large, more extensive search of the German countryside, we call off the search and focused on helping the newly formed G.M.R.D. Frustrated with the apparent false sighting, I decided to take a break in early August to collect my thoughts by visiting my family, who lived nearby. There things changed. My kid sister was diagnosed as bipolar when she was very young. Having lived with the disorder for several years, she would now swing between violent outbursts and deep depressions and was forced to take a plethora of medications to help keep herself stable, but it did little to improve her quality of life. After only a few days, something triggered an abnormally violent reaction when my parents were away.

I led her to the backyard where I used my military defensive training to subdue her. It broke my heart to see her like this but it was all I could do to protect her from herself. About that time, a strange female figure appeared nearby. She did not resemble anyone I had seen before at first. Her presence was calming and surreal. After looking at us, she walked over and knelt down beside my sister. Seeing her plight, the figure began to weep. Her tears, which resembled quicksilver, fell upon my sister and quickly stopped her from struggling. I was a bit beside myself with the situation. My sister's expression soon grew calm and content, a very rare sight. When the figure was done, she stood up and smiled to me. As if on command, I let my sister go; and somehow she had been changed. She got up and lovingly embraced me with a smile I had never seen on her before. When I looked around, the female figure was gone. I then began to question just what had happened.

My parents were shocked and elated to see the results of what happened, but I could not offer any explanation and did not tell them what I had witnessed. The next day we visited the physician and psychologist who had been working with my sister for many years. They were astounded by her change and unable find find a logical reason for her sudden improvement. After a few days of testing, they concluded that she was completely cured of her disorder, though the reasons remained unknown. The only clue was a strange increase of a Lithium ion they had never seen before. Hearing this, I took their findings and my sister to Dr. Daiguitas. There was no explanation he could give, except for the figure’s tears. We concluded that I had encountered the reported Hybrid; a second Hybrid. Shortly thereafter, Farah reappeared; this time in Germany. To our surprise, she was not alone. She introduced us to the new Hybrid; her name was Emma.

I thanked Emma for what she had done. She simply smiled. We invited the young ladies to the new base so Dr. Daiguitas could do some more tests. They declined at first and proceeded to dart about the European countryside, as if testing our ability to keep up with them. Hybrid Unit split into two teams and chased after them. During this time, Emma acquired her codename of 'Nightfall' due to her ability to manipulate darkness. In response, Dr. Daiguitas used his contacts to acquire us enhanced day and night-vision goggles to filter out some of the light and shadow illusions the girls would use. This improved our tracking abilities significantly. Over the course of the next eight months, we began to question the need to continually watch over them. Just after the one year anniversary of the G.M.R.D., there were sightings of a possible third Hybrid in Russia. Luckily for us, the girls finally decided to let Dr. Daiguitas have a look at them.

This allowed me to take a small team out to confirm the sightings. The description was of a strange girl in a green kimono. After a few weeks of searching, we came up with nothing. By this time, Farah and Emma had join us, along with the rest of Hybrid Unit. With more manpower, we spread out to more Russian cities looking for any new signs. The girls, however, seemed more interested in the sights and sounds of Moscow (which made things easier for us). On a tip, my team, undercover as always, headed out to Saint Petersburg, where fresh leads finally led us to Catherine Palace. There, to our surprise, we found the third Hybrid walking the southern garden. She introduced herself as Ginny and said she had expected us. We exchanged pleasantries asked a few questions. Though her answers were cryptic, she was very grateful to us for looking after her 'sisters'. Before we could inquire further, however, Chechen rebels launched a morning terrorist attack.

A large militia group had stormed the palace and began taking hostages. I called my other teams in for assistance, leaving only one small team to protect Farah and Emma. While we quickly subdued some of the rebels, we also found ourselves trapped inside the palace basement. Within a few hours, my other teams arrived. Working covertly without the knowledge of the Russian authorities, we launched our own counter-assault. We successfully took out most of the rebels, but the rest were barricaded in the ballroom with a majority of the hostages. Unsure how to proceed due to the suicidal nature of the Chechens, we were at a loss. Then Ginny began to sing. She used her ethereal voice to entrance everyone in the ballroom; and even several members of my teams. With Russian federal troops surrounding the palace, we gathered all the rebels and placed them with the hostages inside the ballroom. We then made our discrete exit as the palace was stormed.

Ginny informed us that our presence would not be remembered by either the rebels or the hostages, much to our relief. Farah and Emma met us back in Moscow. After talking with the three, they agreed for us to be their trusted guardians. It was then that official teams were created for the three girls. Team Morningstar would watch over Farah, Team Nightfall would guard Emma, and Team Illuminati would cover Ginny. We chose Ginny's codename of 'Illuminati' (“the enlightened one”) due to the vast knowledge and wisdom she shared with us. The girls traveled with us back to Munich, where Dr. Daiguitas was elated to meet Ginny. We tried to enjoy the trip back as we knew it would be the only rest we'd get. Surprisingly, the girls stayed in Bavaria for several weeks, allowing us to regroup and get organized. Dr. Daiguitas was able to learn much from Ginny, though most of it was typically cryptic and often trivial.

When they finally left Munich, the girls went their separate ways. With new equipment and a new sense of purpose, Team Moonlight, Nightfall, and Illuminati set out with renewed vigor and conviction to continue their mission. This is where we are today. Since Hybrid Unit's roster is rather large, it allowed for a rotation of active members as needed and will help with a supposed expansion of the Hybrid population. Should more Hybrids be found, we will be there to investigate and protect. There are many questions left to be answered and more waiting to be asked. As we watch over them and learn, we find that they are not so different from ourselves. Their rhyme and reason still baffles us sometimes, but it is clear the girls are a positive influence in this world; and so long as that holds true, Section Nine shall be there for them.
